On February 20th, 2025, doctoral candidate Michel Pires de Araujo (Master in Artificial Intelligence-based Solutions) conducted an advanced training session in Artificial Intelligence for the software development teams of the Information Technology Division (DiTI) of the Santa Catarina Military Fire Department (CBMSC).
The training covered not only technical topics — such as the construction, training, and validation of machine learning models — but also essential AI ethics practices aimed at ensuring the robustness of the models, while emphasizing the importance of transparency and the interpretability of automated decisions.
Michel presented strategies for the use of cross-validation techniques, as well as methods for calculating key model evaluation metrics such as accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score. Furthermore, he stressed the importance of data balancing during training to prevent algorithmic bias, using techniques like oversampling and undersampling.
